Born and raised in Chicago’s Portage Park neighborhood, I’ve always enjoyed this city. After high school, I received my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from DePaul University. During my time at DePaul, I worked as a Supportive Living Assistant for a family who’s son had Cerebral Palsy. It was through this work that I realized my love for working with individuals with diverse needs.
After graduating, I continued to work for the family, but also worked full-time as a Mental Health Professional at Neumann Family Services, a non-profit in Ravenswood that helps persons with a dual diagnosis of intellectual/developmental disability and mental illness progress towards independence, self-sufficiency, and self-fulfillment that is possible. I worked with individuals age 18-80. Adults that were capable, but who were never provided the proper schooling to aide in their ability to be independent. This lit a fire in me to be more then an advocate and soon, I was working as a Paraprofessional in an inner-city high school. During my time at the high school, I continued to work with students with diverse needs in both self-contained and co-taught (inclusion) settings. After two years, I decided that education and in a school is where I wanted to be and went to graduate school at University of Illinois Chicago. After a year and a half, I earned my Master’s in Special Education and became a Learning Behavior Specialist.
